Necklift
A neck lift is a cosmetic procedure that specifically addresses the neck and under surface of the chin. One of the more common problems that develop in this area over time is the so-called “turkey gobbler deformity”. This is when the skin becomes extremely lax and flaccid. This deformity is unsightly and can be nicely addressed with the neck lift. Often times only the neck is of concern and individuals simply want this area treated and not the entire face. This is where a neck lift can be of benefit.
Treatment
The procedure takes four to five hours, usually under general anesthesia. Cuts are made in existing skin creases or behind a hairline near the ear. Skin strips and underlying fat deposits are removed before pulling the remaining edges closed. Tissues beneath the skin as well as muscles may be separated from deeper tissues and moved with the skin. Stitches or staples hold incisions closed.
After surgery, patients usually stay in the hospital overnight for observation. Hair can be washed on the day following surgery. Dressings are usually removed on the second day; however, swelling and bruising may be considerable for another few weeks. Patients are encouraged to stay in Rochester during the first few days, as stitches are removed in stages. All stitches and staples are removed during the week to 10 days following surgery. After this, patients can begin using cosmetics, and are usually able to resume normal activities within an additional week or two.
Few complications are involved with this procedure. Potential problems involve the following:
* Blood pooling in pockets beneath the skin
* Loss of adequate blood flow or sensation from the skin
* Temporary weakness in moving an eyebrow or corner of the mouth
* Inadequate healing of incisions
These risks can be minimized by avoiding tobacco use and blood-thinning medications such as aspirin.
Scars can require up to one year to fully fade and blend with surrounding skin. Thinning hair may make some scars more apparent than others. Properly chosen cosmetics, hairstyles, and earrings usually minimize their visibility. Rarely, poorly healed scars require additional measures to improve their appearance.
Face-lift and neck-lift procedures cannot eliminate all signs of aging. Other surgery such as eyelid- or forehead- lifts may also improve a patient's appearance. In addition, wrinkles may need to be treated separately through a skin-resurfacing procedure such as dermabrasion, chemical peeling, or laser treatment. These treatments may have to be performed in a series of hospitalizations or outpatient visits.
Although these procedures provide a more youthful appearance, the results usually decrease with time. Both genetic and environmental influences cause the face to show further signs of aging. Repeat treatments, or "mini-lifting," may occasionally be recommended.
